Richard Henry Ward (center with shirt off) died on April 20,1970
from a booby trap explosion. Gerald Butler also lost his life that day and
others were wounded.
Dick Ward was from Philadelphia, New York and started his tour on August 1, 1969.
In November of 1969 Dick and Third platoon were under attack from VC mortars
causing the death of Scott Warren Iggulden.
Many years later I found out from 3rds Lt. Waterbury that Dick had taken a
piece of shrapnel in one of his eyes and didn't report it because he was
concerned that we might get overrun and wanted to stay to help. That action
would not be a surprise to those who knew Richard Henry Ward.

I was stationed at Fort Bragg in the 548 Engineer Battalion with Henry from
January 1968 until I was shipped to the 577th Engineer Battalion as a surveyor, Tuy Hoa -
Vietnam in August 1968. Henry was my best friend and we chased women together
and I thought he was a true friend when he was ready to fight a guy who banged
the side of my new GTX with his car door in a parking lot in Goldsboro, N.C.
I also remember Henry was a lifeguard at the base swimming pool and main base.
I lost touch with Henry and after wondering about him for twenty five years,
I found out that he had been sent to Vietnam at about the time my tour was up
and had been k.i.a. there. It broke my heart. I called and talked to his Uncle
and Mother. Of course time has erased much and the picture you posted does not
bring back much memories. However, I do remember Henry at his best with that
smooth yankee accent: "Hey youse guys..."
This is great. I love you Henry.
